By the time he pulled into the parking lot at Waimanalo Beach Park, Kai was more nervous than excited. There was this little niggling feeling that no matter what he did to help her relax, she just wasn’t going to want to go into the water.

It wasn’t a deal-breaker in a relationship as far as he was concerned, but being in the water was a large part of his life.

And because of that, he wanted to share it with Summer.

He found a spot near the end of the parking lot and smiled at the familiar bumper stickers he saw on the cars and trucks nearby.

KEEP WAIMANALO COUNTRY

Half a dozen logo stickers for surf and clothing shops and more quippy phrases.

WHA? YOU IN ONE HURRY? TRY GO EARLY

DA KINE

HI LIFE

And a bumper sticker that put it all into perspective for him.

HANG LOOSE!

The sticker had a shaka sign behind the word and it reminded him to sit back, relax, and take a breath.

He let go of Summer’s hand and put the car into park before he looked over at her in the passenger seat. “Ready?”

Summer drew in a breath like she was preparing to jump off a cliff. “Yes.”

“I’ll get everything out of the back.”

Kai opened his door and got out, making his way around to the trunk and opening it up with a smile. He picked up the insulated cooler bag with the food in it and a couple of big beach towels. There was going to be a lot of shade available so he wouldn’t worry too much about her burning, but he’d be more than happy to keep an eye on her.

All of her.

Just in case.

“Hey.”

He turned and saw her standing beside him. “Hey.” He couldn’t help smiling at her. “You look so good.”

“In a ratty old top and shorts? Awesome.”

Kai shook his head. “Fight it all you want, but I think you’re beautiful. No amount of second guessing me or making jokes about yourself is going to convince me to join in.”

He knew she wasn’t fishing for compliments.

No, the look on her face said she just didn’t believe it.

Crazy? But true.

He was just glad he’d met her when he did. He’d just keep telling her the truth and maybe one day, she’d believe it. Even then, he’d tell her again and again how beautiful she was to him, because it was the truth.

She held out her hands, reaching for the armload of things he was holding. “I can help.”

Nodding, he put one of the towels into her arms and then she surprised him by taking the second.

“Anything else?”

“No.” He straightened up and closed the trunk. “Let’s go find a place to eat.”

They stepped up onto the grass surrounding the parking lot and Kai kept his focus on the beach. Waimanalo Beach was a long, nearly pristine stretch of sand that faded into water so blue it looked like turquoise, shining in the sun. The trees in between the two were mostly ironwoods and provided a thick canopy covering their heads.
